DB Consulting Group Receives Gold MarCom Award for Wraparound Services Pamphlet for Youth

SILVER SPRING, MD DB Consulting Group, Inc. (DB) received a distinguished 2009 Gold MarCom Award for its Wraparound Services pamphlet for young people.  Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals, the prestigious MarCom Awards recognize excellence in communications, marketing, and emerging media.

The publication, “Your Life, Your Future: An Introduction to Wraparound,” was made possible with funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within its Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), Child, Adolescent and Family Branch.

Wraparound is a family centered, community-oriented, strengths-based, highly individualized planning process aimed at helping young people achieve important outcomes. Services are designed to help youth meet their unmet needs both within and outside of formal human services systems, while they remain in their neighborhoods and homes, whenever possible.

The MarCom Awards are sponsored by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals and remain one of the industry's leading awards programs. This year’s MarCom winners were selected from more than 5,000 entries throughout the United States and several other countries. The Gold Award represents marketing and communications excellence that exceeds the high standards of the industry norm.

“We are honored to have worked with SAMHSA and its many experts within the field of mental health to highlight the importance of this very important issue and our commitment to supporting our nation’s youth,” said Anton Bizzell, MD, Vice President Health and Clinical Services of DB. “This publication is an excellent example of innovative approaches utilized in the community-based treatment for children with emotional and behavioral disorders and their families, and we are excited that MarCom recognized our efforts.”

Earlier this year, DB Consulting Group received four leading communications awards for its work in support of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

DB won two 2009 Gold Hermes Creative Awards for  its “Clearing the Air” handbook created for the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, HHS and for its “Do Something Good” brochure created for Neighborhood Networks, a HUD Initiative.  DB also received two 2009 Silver Communicator Awards for its National Fair Housing Training Academy Exhibit and for its Neighborhood Networks exhibit both for HUD.

Fellows’ Graduation Highlights DB’s Role in Building a Sustainable Prevention Workforce

The August 2009 graduation of 40 Fellows from the Center for Substance Abuse and Prevention (CSAP) Prevention Fellowship Program marked DB’s successful support of a key CSAP goal—to resolve the nation’s prevention workforce crisis.
CSAP staff and representatives from 18 mentor agencies throughout the United States, District of Columbia, and U.S. territories honored the graduates on August 17-18, marking their completion of this rigorous work and training program. DB’s expertise in managing all aspects of the program since 2006 has provided states and communities with a robust pool of International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium-certified prevention specialists.

The newly graduated Fellows are prepared to develop and implement effective substance abuse prevention strategies and deliver appropriate support services. With this foundation, they will now work in state agencies and other prevention-focused organizations or complete undergraduate and graduate degrees in a prevention-related field.

Joining CSAP Director Frances M. Harding at this 2-day event were notable speakers from the prevention field, including General Arthur T. Dean, Chairman and CEO of Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) and former Fellows Christine Laux, Epidemiology Support, Office of Drug Control Policy of the Michigan Department of Community Health, and a 25-year veteran of the behavioral health field, and Ivón L. Urquilla, Region 5 and 6 Prevention Manager for the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Washington State Department of Social & Health Services.

Building Tomorrow’s Prevention Workforce Today

The CSAP Prevention Fellowship Program project is part of a comprehensive project portfolio managed by DB’s Health & Clinical Services Division. The Division supports critical public health initiatives for more than 15 HHS agencies and nonprofit organizations. The Prevention Fellowship Program was launched in 2006 in response to the swiftly declining prevention workforce, which challenged states and communities in recruiting and retaining qualified prevention professionals. By fostering the development of skills, credentials, and knowledge needed to deliver services to Americans of all ages and their families, the Program—with DB’s support—enables states and communities to keep pace with rapid advances in the prevention field and build a workforce of certified prevention specialists capable of applying best practices and advanced prevention strategies.

DB Brokers Knowledge To Help Primary Care Providers Transform HIV Care

If knowledge is power, DB Consulting Group (DB) has empowered healthcare providers that serve minority communities severely impacted by HIV. Under contract with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), DB conducted evaluative research for the Supporting Networks of HIV Care by Enhancing Primary Medical Care Program. Results of DB’s meta analysis have given non-profit primary care organizations from Baltimore to Los Angeles the evidence-based tools they need to develop, improve, and expand comprehensive HIV primary medical care and treatment services for minorities.

Phase I of this three-phase project began in 2006, when DB’s partners identified the information and organizational needs of 46 primary care organizations nationwide. In Phase II, organizations received one or some combination of three types of support.

  • Onsite technical assistance and training (TA/T) for 1 to 2 months provided organizations with support in an identified area of need, such as HIV counseling and testing, clinical case management, financial management, or program and service development.
  • Intensive capacity building over 3 to 6 months offered TA/T in several topics in areas of identified need.
  • Participation in one to two regional meetings a year facilitated networking with other primary care organizations and facilities for future referrals for follow-up testing and other HIV services.

DB led Phase III through its HRSA-approved Evaluation Center. To assess the impact and effectiveness of the three types of support offered to participating organizations, the DB team developed pre/post tests, recipient feedback forms, and electronic questionnaires. It also conducted telephone and focus group interviews. These tools were used to measure satisfaction with TA/T, changes in knowledge, ability to apply that knowledge to improve and expand services, and capacity to build on initial improvements to create comprehensive HIV services for minority patients.

DB identified real-world benefits from Phase II interventions: Two organizations secured additional funding as a result of grant-writing TA/T, several purchased electronic health record software to improve patient confidentiality, others established new referral partnerships through networking at regional meetings, and most reported improved knowledge levels among clinical staff and enhanced outreach efforts.

In August 2009, DB concluded Phase III. Results from its meta analysis of collected data will allow HRSA and its TA/T contractors to:

  • determine which TA/T components are most effective
  • identify relationships among organization type, needs, and TA/T received
  • examine the efficacy of certain combinations and sequencing of TA/T methods

“The knowledge gained from this effort is a win-win for primary care organizations and communities on the frontline of the HIV epidemic,” said Anton Bizzell, M.D., Vice President of DB’s Health & Clinical Services Division. “Primary care organizations will be able to offer outreach and services that work for their organization and the populations they serve. As a result, HIV prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment will be strengthened in communities that desperately need support.”
